Billy is a main character in the second season of Stranger Things.

In 1984, Billy moved from California to Hawkins, Indiana and began attending Hawkins High School.

Personality and traits

Billy is captivating and edgy, with a violent and unpredictable nature only revealed to those closest to him, especially those of a younger age. His personality leads to rumors that he killed someone at a previous school.

He drives a black Camaro, steals peoples' girlfriends, and is a drinking-game pro.

Max and Billy are stepsiblings. They have a complicated history and difficult relationship. Billy would often treat Max in a controlling, domineering fashion.[1]

Behind the scenes

The character was first revealed via a casting call obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.[2] On October 14, 2016, it was revealed the role had gone to Dacre Montgomery.[3]

In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, the Duffers hinted that Billy could be a possible antagonist.[4] This was later confirmed by the Duffers as well as Shawn Levy. The Duffers stated their decision to include Billy in the season stemmed from their desire to have a human character that could be worse than any supernatural monster.[1][5]

In an interview Dacre Montgomery stated Billy is inspired by Jack Torrance from the 1980 film The Shining.[6]
