Shepard was a government scientist at Hawkins National Laboratory under the employment of Dr. Brenner, who referred to him as "son." Wearing a hazmat suit linked to a chain rope, he entered the Upside Down through the gate in the lab.
Reporting back to the lab through radio, he screamed "There's something else in here. Pull me out!" The noises of the monster were heard over the intercom as the cord was yanked violently in different directions. When they reeled him in, there was only the cord and a bloodied piece of his suit left.

Behind the scenes
The character is credited as Test Pilot Shepard, a possible allusion to Alan Shepard, who was also a test pilot and the first American in space, as well as the commander of Apollo 14—the third manned mission to land on the moon.
